Brother Mono Laser HL-2240D

The Brother HL-2240D sits plumb in the middle of the currently available mono laser printers on the market and it appears to be the embodiment of the word “average” in terms of price, size and features. The HL-2240D is a 24ppm monochrome laser printer with a proper 250 sheet output tray and a decent 100 sheet output shelf at the top. You also get a decent rocker power switch.

Internally, there is a duplex unit which is a feature that we like, but if you’re on a tight budget you can save an extra $15 and opt for the HL-2240 (no duplex, hence no “D” suffix).

With the top cover open you can remove the toner cartridge which reveals that it’s only a starter unit, and that it’s good for 700 pages. The other point is that the drum and toner cartridges are separate units that clip together. In theory, this should reduce the cost of toner because you’re not throwing the drum away every time you refill. In practice, things aren’t quite so simple. A basic TN-2210 toner cost $50 and lasts for 1200 pages which works out to $0.40 per page. That’s exactly in line with the Canon, Dell and HP printers. Step up to a high yield TN-2220 cartridge and the life doubles to 2600 pages and drop the running cost to a healthier 50%. The bad news for small offices is that the DR-2200 drum lasts 12,000 pages, so for every ten toners you install you’ll have to splash out on a drum unit, bumping up the cost per page and tipping the Brother into expensive territory.

Brother uses the four status lights (Toner, Drum, Error and Ready) to deliver more information than the names might suggest. For instance, a combination of two lights indicates that the drum’s coming to the end of its life. It then switches to indicate that the drum has now reached the end of its life.

With the drivers installed and the printer running, we were able to check the status of the printer by pressing the Go button three times in quick succession. The printer spits out a status sheet that includes the current fireware version. In our case, the printer was on version 1.1 so we downloaded the v1.12 update and installed the file in Windows. There was a fiar amount of flashing lights, and after a minute or so the job was done.

The status sheet also revealed that the HL-2240D has a mere 8MB of membory and we see that the processor ticks along at 200MHz. Given those figures, we were pleasantly surprised that the printer speeds were a consistent 38 or 29 seconds for 10 pages, regardless of whether it was plain text, mixed content or Powerpoint.

Overall, this is a decent printer that does a fair job without setting the pulse racing.
